Respect the Call

Effective this season, US Soccer has significantly increased the minimum penalties for misconduct towards officials from registered participants (players, coaches, registered adults). This policy triples sanctions for incidents of misconduct towards minor referees. A new category called Gross Misconduct has been added, which includes insulting, belittling, insinuating or taunting behavior which undermines the authority of the referee.

We expect all Northampton coaches, players, and parents to set an exceptionally high standard for the rest of the league when it comes to our treatment of referees and opponents.

Remember, this is a game! Let the kids play, stay positive, and don't argue any calls (they aren't changing their mind anyway).

You can read more from Mass Youth Soccer Association and US Soccer.

New Pre-Game Routine

In light of the uptick in misconduct, MYSA has also instituted a new pre-game routine which includes:
  • All players, coaches, and referees lining up 5 yards from the spectator sideline
  • A home team representative reading the new sportsmanship statement (available here and included in the video on this page)
  • And a pre-game handshake (since multiple instances of misconduct have been reported during post-game handshakes)
NSC also encourages our teams to initiate a post-game handshake, though we leave discretion to our coaches if they feel the need to protect their players.

Again, we expect the highest standard of conduct from NSC members, because that's what we are known for! Thank you again for your respectful and passionate support for everyone's children and our referees.
