Typical sessions include instruction on dribbling, passing, and shooting, followed by drills where players keep moving and get many touches on the ball. We usually finish each session with small field 3v3 or 4v4 games in which coaches use teachable moments to further explain the game. This program is the ground floor of Northampton Soccer’s more competitive travel program.
Expectations: We will be working with the children to introduce them to the game, and teaching them the basics of the game, i.e., passing, controlling the ball, dribbling, and positioning. Training will include a mix of skill work and play -- and keeping their attention and enthusiasm.
Equipment: The club will provide them with a jersey. Please have your player wear the shirt, shorts, socks, shin guards and cleats for each training. Each player must also bring water and a size 3 ball to each training.
Volunteer Coaches Welcome!
If you are a parent of a child in Pre-Travel and would be interested in helping to coach, please contact our Director of Coaching, Bryan Jersky, at [email protected]. You will be required to complete a CORI check and our coaches' registration process to participate. It's well worth it, and our club relies on volunteer help!

Unsure whether your 7 year old should join Pre-Travel or u7 Travel?
Generally speaking, if your child has never played soccer before or may not be ready for competitive games, then Pre-Travel is probably best. If your child is already familiar with soccer, or has participated in our Pre-Travel program or one similar, for two or more seasons, then they are probably ready for u7! You can read more about that program on the Travel page.
Interested in volunteering as a Parent Coach?
Our programs rely on the contributions of generous parents who serve as coaches for our teams.
If you are passionate about soccer – or not – and want to be closely involved in the social-emotional growth of your child and their teammates, it's a highly rewarding experience!
Assisting our Pre-Travel Program will be great training for anyone who wants to consider being a coach in the future.
Please contact the Registrar, who will send you instructions for doing so, including the completion of a CORI check.
